The parish history of St. John the Beloved spans 170 years. This faith community has a long and fascinating past, which parallels many of the notable developments in the nation, as well as the low country of South Carolina.
From the earliest documented mention of Catholicism in Summerville in 1839, through the dedication of the first church building in 1898, down through many generations to the building of the modern church building in 1969, and it's expansion in 2007, our current parish is anchored to a rich foundation of community, faith, perseverance and sacrificial love.
The dedication Plaque from the original church, which is now visible in the chapel of the new church, clearly documents that Bishop Henry P. Northrop set the cornerstone May 15, 1898 and dedicated the church as The Church of Saint John the Beloved, April 16, 1899.
